Brussels wins award for pedestrian zone – and vetoes another project

The city of Brussels has won a European town planning award for its pedestrian zone – in the same week that it vetoed plans for another pedestrian area on Place Royale.
Brussels city hall said the award “affirms our willingness to give the city centre back to its inhabitants and to contribute to a better environment”.
The extensive pedestrian zone of Brussels is one of the three winning projects. It was selected because of the fact that pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged in the heart of the city and that it is searching for a new balance between residential and tourist districts through the revaluation of social and environmental aspects of the available space, with the aim of giving the public space to the population.
