Biological artificial reef to protect Belgian coast

stormaanzee

Next month Belgium will start building of an artificial reef at the Belgian coast in De Panne.

Only natural materials will be used for the 100-square-metre test project, including mussels, tube worms and seaweed.

The idea is to see how well it protects the coast from erosion that is caused by heavy storms.

On Thursday State secretary for the North Sea, Philippe De Backer, gave the green light for the pilot project, cutely named ‘Coastbusters’. “The scientist in me is very excited!” he tweeted.

The three-year pilot project is funded by five companies that hope to sell the technique abroad.
